Every two years the architecture world takes over Italy for La Biennale Architettura (Venice Biennale), one of the most prestigious international architecture events in the world with origins dating back to the late 1800s. Thousands of architects, designers and educators flood the streets of Venice sharing their designs and ideas on the built environment with the public. This year, three FIU architecture professors and dozens of students will exhibit their work on this grand architecture stage. Prof. Thomas Spiegelhalter will present and curate the event on Carbon-Positive Buildings, Green-Blue Infrastructure Scenarios for Miami and the Greater Island, 2018-2100, with an expert panel on Synthetic Biology for Carbon-Positive Architecture with Autodesk Life Science microbiologists and geneticists on Living Systems.
Carbon-Positive, and Synthetic Biological Architecture Imaginations for Miami Greater Islands 2021 -2100 The Miami Climate Resilient Urban Nexus Choices (CRUNCH) research for carbon-neutral city scenarios is a multi-disciplinary effort addressing the food, water, and energy sector. The Miami project analyses, codes, optimizes, and tests AI-assisted synthetic biology workflows and bio-diverse carbon-positive city designs and green-blue infrastructural scenarios from now to 2100. All designs focus on strategies for coastal Miami to adapt to sea-level rise, hurricanes, displacements, and heatwaves. These environments are the most climate-vulnerable zones worldwide. We are on the verge of a revolution where the same design principles applied to the built environment can be applied to biology and nanotechnology.

Prof. Thomas Spiegelhalter will be presenting at the Networks, Markets & People (NMP 2024) International Symposium. His lecture, titled "From Blueprint to Reality: A Design-Built Analysis of Urban Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality," has been accepted as part of the Symposium Proceedings and will be published in a SPRINGER book. The Symposium, organized by the UNESCO MED LAB – Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria (Italy), in collaboration with ASTRI Scientific Association and the National Italian Committee of ICOMOS, is supported by various international academic institutions and scientific societies.
